Over the weekend, the only news story was, of course, the historic news that President Joe Biden has dropped his bid for reelection and put his support behind Vice President Kamala Harris.
Many think pieces will be (rightfully) written about what this says about President Biden. The sacrifice. The nobility.
Do we wish it had happened sooner? Of course! But it happened in time - and, for right now, that’s what matters.
As we were reminded this weekend, doing the right thing isn’t always neat or easy. But that doesn’t mean it shouldn’t be done.
Had he stayed in the race, President Biden’s legacy would have been the end of democracy (not hyperbole). Instead, his legacy shows his character - someone who put the good of the country ahead of the hubris of a man.
But while those think pieces get published and books get written, I want to talk about something else.
Campaigns used to be fun!
On January 21st, we can have all the conversations we want about Harris’ record and things we know we’re really going to need to push the administration on.
But for now?
As I told my mom on Sunday night - My heart has never loved like this before.
Because it is going to take all of us, and all the energy we have, to get Kamala Harris into the White House.
That hasn’t changed. We were always going to need to work because the threat hasn’t changed - Donald Trump and JD Vance are a threat to our democracy and freedoms. We absolutely must win, and win by a large margin, in November.
What has changed is the energy.
The Harris/TBD ticket has only existed, in reality, for less than 24 hours, and yet the money that’s pouring in (big ol checks and, vitally, small-dollar donors), the energy online, the energy in person… this is big.
The other side can’t match that and when they try, it’s dangerous.
We are going to have a damn blast for the next four months, and at the end of it -
Kamala Harris is going to win this election.
Let’s work hard and enjoy the coconuts of our labor.
Don’t forget - this is also a podcast :)
Head to kimmoffat.com/thenews for direct links to both an audio and video version of the podcast, as well as links to everything I discussed here and in the episode.
Also, I wrote a book! It has nothing to do with news at all!
“december.” Faced with the end of a loving 22-year relationship, a young couple replays the moments that brought them to where they are now. Leaving will break her fiancé’s heart. Staying will break her own.
It’s available on Amazon, or as an ebook on Amazon or Apple Books.
Most important, don’t forget…
